Artist Biography: Born Domenico di Pace, son of Giacomo di Pace, a laborer. Took the name Beccafumi, from his patron, Lorenzo Beccafumi, who adopted him and sent him to study painting with Mecarino. Between 1510-1512 he went to Rome where he was able to see and study the work of Raphael and Michelangelo. Belonged to the first generation of artists to be known as "Mannerists." Beccafumi may have been troubled by a compulsion to react against the classicism of the Renaissance, without being capable of an overt revolt. He, along with other young artists of his generation, was profoundly impressed by Michelangelo's style of as represented on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. ~~Active primarily in Siena, but painted also for the Duomo in Pisa and in 1541 for the Palazzo Doria, Genoa. ~~Although Sienese, Beccafumi's drawings reveal a host of Florentine and Roman sources as well, and his fusion of these sources often produced works of eccentric originality.~~Reference: Passavant, J.D.
